What Are Collated Screws?
Collated screws are fasteners linked by a sturdy plastic strip, specifically designed to fit seamlessly into most major auto-feed screw guns. The automated collating process ensures precise alignment between the screws and the strip, reducing the risk of jams during automatic feeding.
Why Use Collated Screws?
Bugle head drywall screws or metal roof screws are among the most common types used when securing drywall sheets to ceiling joists, wall studs, wood, metal tracks and more. While single screw systems can be operated with a simple screwdriver or electric drywall screwdriver for the average do-it-yourself type person, it may not be as cost effective when hundreds or even thousands have to be installed every day for professional builders.
Before the invention of automatic feeding (auto-feed in short) screwdrivers, handling loose screws presented a challenge to installers while they positioned drywalls with one hand and tried to place the screws perpendicular to the drywall, driving them but not over-driving them with the other.
Drywall contractors were overjoyed with the introduction of the auto-feed system, which came in the form of either an attachment to a standard loose screw-gun, or a dedicated screw-gun system with an integrated, oftentimes adjustable, auto-feeder.
Auto-feed systems not only increased speed (up to four times faster than installing loose screws) and efficiency, but also improved workplace safety. Gone are the days of fumbling clumsily through bulk packages, fighting to keep screws to stay on top of the Philips drive bit while balancing your arm over the drywall trying to pinpoint the drill and drive location.

With 100% Made in Taiwan being an inherent part of the BDN Fasteners DNA, our collated screws are no different – everything from the screws to the collating of strips is all done in our facilities. BDN Collated screws undergo stringent, in-house quality control tests during and after manufacturing, minimizing any possibility of jamming during application.
After talking about collated screws, let’s learn about the uncollated screws. Uncollated screws, as its name suggests, are the uncollated version of the same type of screws, packed loose in trade packs or cartons.

Collated Screws FAQs: Answers to Common Questions
Here are some of the most common questions to help you better understand collated screws.
Q1. What is the difference between collated and uncollated screws?
Collated screws are pre-arranged in strips or coils for use with automatic screw guns, while uncollated screws are loose and typically installed by hand. Here’s a quick comparison of their differences:
Feature | Collated Screws | Uncollated Screws |
Packaging | Pre-arranged in strips, coils, or cartridges | Sold loose in boxes or bags |
Installation Method | Used with auto-feed screwdrivers | Installed manually with standard tools |
Installation Speed | Faster, suitable for high-volume applications | Slower, better for small-scale projects |
Handling Convenience | Reduces manual handling and speeds up workflow | Requires individual handling during use |
Best For | Large, repetitive construction tasks | Occasional use or small DIY projects |
Q2. Are collated screws more expensive than uncollated screws?
Usually, yes. Collated screws tend to cost more due to their packaging and convenience, but they can save labor time, especially for large projects.
Q3. Do I need a special tool to use collated screws?
Yes. Collated screws require an auto-feed screwdriver or a compatible collated screw gun to install them efficiently.
